Zoo animals' wildlife friends: Life science education support for the curriculum in environmental life science education. Our outreach programs cater to all ages, from PK to elementary and middle schools. The needs addressed by this program include supporting data that indicates our life science education programs align with the curriculum for PK-3rd grades and 7th grade life science. This life science curriculum involves six years of academic study starting in PK, emphasizing the importance of stewardship for the sustainability of our world. Many schools we serve are Title 1, which typically allocates funding exclusively for reading and math, leaving life science education behind. Program topics include exploring the interconnected ecological components of our shared world, understanding our responsibility to care for the environment, practicing stewardship, and recognizing our daily responsibilities.
In grades PK-K, we focus on using our senses to understand our world and how individual stewardship can positively impact our environment through conservation and by protecting habitats and natural resources (reduce, reuse, recycle). In Grade 1, students learn about how they interact with their world, covering life's basic needs for survival: food, water, shelter, and habitat territory and its significance. Grade 2 emphasizes that change occurs all around us, highlighting the ways weather and human activities alter our earth, affecting water, air, land, and living systems. In Grade 3, we delve into our interactions within the ecosystem, discussing the relationships between living and non-living elements of the environment and the importance of the food chain and energy flow. Finally, Grade 7 Life Science deepens understanding of change, cycles, patterns, and species relationships, illustrating the dynamics of ecosystems and biomes that contribute to life's processes and each individual's role in it.
Our mobile petting zoo, featuring barnyard buddies, provides all ages with an educational and therapeutic experience. Here, participants learn about husbandry care practices and the ecological values each animal contributes, as well as the importance of species groups such as herds, flocks, and colonies. We foster an understanding of the interlinking components of all living things.
Additionally, our pony rides and therapy ponies promote fun, healing, compassion, and leadership skills for all ages.
